If ever I’ve felt behind, it’s now. I’ve been a web designer for like.. ever! And up until I started this project I didn’t realize how distinct the roles of individuals in a web design process had become. I used to handle what I could with scripting, some database and go crazy with my what I do best - Making it look GOOD! Then all of a sudden I meet a beautiful, intelligent, sexy and sophisticated application called WordPress1. I’ve never felt so inadequate in my life!
I immediately jumped into all the cool features. I’d gone and installed every possible WordPress widget out there. Yea, I got widgetized for a sec. Now I “knew” I was a Web Designer. I “thought” I was a web developer. Until I attempted to conquer WordPress themes. There are a zillion of them out there but “a real designer” doesn’t use themes. I MUST create my own. And damn if I didn’t try.
Don’t get me wrong, anyone can pickup WordPress, use a them and blog away. But to try to create one for the first time was, as the title appropriately relays, A Pleasant Pain in my Ass! I had to question myself as to whether or not I was worthy of even being a web designer (but only for a minute..).
I haven’t slept in like 4 days! I’ve lived on CSS sites, buried myself in PHP books and can’t stop spending money on Amazon and Borders (book store). So besides the Pain in my ass, the pleasant thing is that WordPress came along at the right time for me. Right about when I needed to “upgrade.” And upgrading would be an upcoming blog entry.
Stay tuned, another kick ass theme is about to be unleashed!
